Video – Fall 2022 (5) 1952 Chris Craft Holiday 19′ Restored – Half Moon Lake, WI – Jim Smith – YouTube

Photos from previous owner – Carrie & John.  Thanks Carrie

Numbers matching museum quality restoration

Between the years of 1951 and 1953 Chris Craft introduced the 19 Foot Holiday. A total of 384 boats were made employing the use of two-tone woods. Because of the style of the bottom these boats are best served on small to medium sized lakes. This boat has been very well restored and has a unique teak floor installed as well as custom upholstery. It has been upgraded to a 12 Volt system and has a shore power outlet, a no soak bottom which was installed in 2014 and a bilge blower. The varnish is like new and ready for a season of fun boating on the water. The boat also has a freshwater washout such that no salt water could ever sit in the motor. Over 50K has been invested in the restoration and ongoing maintenance of this boat. Lastly the Chris Craft KLC engine has been rebuilt and provides 130Lbs of pressure per cylinder. The trailer was new 4 years ago.

From Tom Henry

November 13, 2021

THR#11 info from Tom

I put together a package for you.  I put an original bill of sale and a mileage statement.    I put a copy of my notes while we were building it you will find interesting.

I cut a windshield banner apart to mail but you can just piece it back together. I put my original business card that would have come with the car and my new one in also.

I believe I built 3 coupes, yours mine and 1 other in the 45THR scheme. My car does not have the cam though but I did a chambered pipe instead.  The other 2 cars have the blue lighted bowtie on the rear but on yours the guy wanted a retro SS emblem. He also did not want the windshield banner.

Cam bumped THR#11 to over 525hp.

I built about 19 6th gens and I may do a final edition 23 if there is enough interest.   I’d like to hear about 23’s if you do them.  Wild Cherry

Thanks Tom.  I appreciate all the paperwork & documentation.  Jim

The first race of the ‘new millennium’

The four ‘REAL’ Pace Cars were sun-roof delete

2000 replica cars were built by Pontiac & all had sun-roofs

ONLY FOUR ‘REAL’ PACE CARS WERE BUILT

The four cars were ‘Special Build’ cars & never assigned or sold through a Pontiac Dealer.  They were assigned to the GM Heritage Collection & Pontiac Racing in Warren, MI.  Three of four ‘REAL’ Pace Cars are currently in ‘The Jim Smith Collection’.

#0029 Split-field car – owned by George Tuominen

#0031 Lead/camera car – owned by ‘The Jim Smith Collection’  2,515 miles

                    There is a fifth car…………..

#0043 is at Daytona Archives & never got the graphic/light conversion

#0031 History & Facts

#0031 was the Lead Camera Car for 2000 Daytona 500 & 2000 Pepsi 400

#0031 has been in the GM Heritage Collection since 2000

#0031 was released for sale by GM at 2009 Barrett-Jackson – Palm Beach

The car was sold on Friday – April 10, 2009  –  Lot #416

Jay Weidner from Texas purchased the car & called me.

All GM Heritage Cars were sold with a ‘Salvage Title’ or ‘Bill-of-Sale’

#0031 had a ‘Salvage Title’ & retained the correct Neeper Shadow Wheels with Good Year Eagle F1 Fiorino tires

To insure 100% authenticity the camera mounting tape and wire clips have been left on the car. We are currently trying to locate camera housing for the roof.  Fox Sports did the broadcast.  If anyone knows where we can find this camera housing, please contact us. (Camera can be seen in overhead photo)

The door graphics were changed for the Pepsi 400 Race              (See photos)

Jay & Jim Smith visited a number of times over the summer & into fall 2009.

Jay found another car and thought the car should be with #0045 & #0058 as part of the collection.

#0031 joined ‘The Jim Smith Collection’ & arrived in Wisconsin Saturday evening – September 12, 2009.  It’s a welcomed addition

2000 Race Facts

Buster Auton drove the Pace Car (#0031)

Jackie Joyner-Kersee was the Honorary Starter

Sam Gibara from Good Year was the Grand Marshall

Dale Jarrett won the race under caution

Bobby Labonte was the highest finishing Pontiac (6th place), signed the dash & went on to win the 2000 NASCAR Championship

Dale Earnhardt, Sr. finished 21st

RUMOR?

Dale Earnhardt, Sr. liked to bump the back of the Pace Car during caution laps just to let them know he was there.  Rumor has it that Dale bumped the left rear bumper (left of license plate – on blue graphic).  I have not found the video clip or lap # yet when this could have happened?  True or not, it makes a great story.

Earnhardt Nation

A colorful, fearless portrait of the larger-than-life first family of NASCAR, the Earnhardt’s, and the rise of the world’s fastest stock car racing organization.

More than sixty years ago, Ralph Earnhardt toiled in a cotton mill in his native North Carolina to support his growing family. Weekends he could be found going pedal to the metal at the dirt tracks, taking on the competition in the early days of box car racing and becoming one of the best short-track drivers in the state. His son, Dale Earnhardt Sr., would become one of the greatest drivers of all time, and his grandson Dale Jr, would become NASCAR’s most popular driver of the 2000s. From a simple backyard garage, the Earnhardt’s reached the highest echelons of professional stock car racing and became the stuff of myth for fans.

Earnhardt Nation is the story of this car racing dynasty and the business that would make them rich and famous—and nearly tear them apart. Covering all the white-knuckle races, including the final lap at the Daytona 500 that claimed the life of the Intimidator, Earnhardt Nation goes deep into the fast-paced world of NASCAR, its royal family’s obsession with speed, and their struggle with celebrity. Jay Busbee takes us deep inside the lives of these men and women who shaped NASCAR. He delves into their personal and professional lives, from failed marriages to rivalries large and small to complex and competitive father-son relationships that have reverberated through generations, and explores the legacy the Earnhardt’s struggle to uphold.

This proves it was an automatic and as far as I know the only one.  If you look at Matts bills the first one shows automatic delete credit of 1800.  When we talked him into doing it he charged me the 1800. Note at the top of the 1800 bull it shows color as red, this was a typical GMMG problem and we were always trying to match everything up as a lot of bills would come through wrong one way or another. In this case the order number and VIN match.   You should white out any customer info.

2002 GMMG Berger SS #84

641 original miles

Many years ago I assisted the 2nd owner buying the car.  I really wanted it then BUT I thought I’d let a new friend buy it seeing as I had a number of GMMG’s already.

I had the opportunity to acquire the car in 2019.

380hp / 6 speed / T-Top

The GM Build Sheet proves it was an automatic and as far as I know is the only one.  If you look at Matt’s bills the first one shows automatic delete credit of $1,800.  When  Rick  (original owner), Tom Henry & Scott Settlemier) talked Matt into doing an auatomatic he charged Tom the $1,800.  Note at the top of the $1,800 bill it shows the color as red, this was a typical GMMG problem and we were always trying to match everything up as a lot of bills would come through wrong one way or another.  In this case the order number & VIN match.  Tom Henry

Jeff & Tami Gassen arrived about 6 pm Friday – November 23, 2013

He forgot his keys 325 miles away – had to get a bolt cutter

The trailer sat locked up until Saturday morning.  I woke up & still hadn’t seen the car.

Santa came but I couldn’t see what was in the tree/trailer.

The anticipation was worse than when I was a kid.

Finally he cut the locks off & there it was.

I have sold these three super rare GTX Ram Air Pace Cars.

GTX/GTP Ram Air Daytona Pace Cars

033, 1067 & 1406

June 7, 2015

There is a guy named Jeff that is selling Pace Car #1278.

He says that there were only 4 Ram Air’s built & only 2 GTX Ram Air Cars got the full treatment.

I called him about this & he insisted there were only two.

I researched this in 2006 or 2007 – talked to SLP & it was determined the number is ABOUT 30 total Ram Air Cars & maybe about 5 had sunroofs.

Jeff said he visited with Jim Mattison & I have done the same.  At the time (a number of years back) Jim didn’t have the Pace Car information.

My research & information suggests only about 30 total may have been built.  SLP could not verify an exact number but close to 30 cars.

Why?  Many were special builds like my 3 of 4 ‘real’ 2000 Daytona Pace Cars & WERE NOT sold through a dealer.  They were special GM Builds.

SLP had authorized dealers & a few of them build Ram Air Replica’s.

I myself have owned three (#0033 – #1067 & #1406 with a sunroof)

This isn’t a big deal – all I’m attempting to do is report the correct information.

Reply from Don Keffe @ POCI explaining…………………… May 12, 2015

Jim,

The owner of the car is GM designer Jeff Denison and his was among the first four built. For some reason, he doesn’t recognize the cars that were converted by authorized shops. His car was definitely built by SLP in Michigan.

This car is exquisite and I doubt that anyone will find a cleaner example.

Thanks!

DJK

Why are DEI cars 381hp while other GMMG’s are 380 hp?

Everyone thought Dale wanted 1 more hp but here is the real story

(makes sense to me)

Dale was # 3 – Dale Jr. was #8 & Steve Park (teammate) was #1 so ‘381’ is the hp

Great thinking Matt!

There have been a rumors floating around that there was a DEI Convert but no one has come forward with the information.

I have it straight from GMMG & you will need to discuss this direct with Matt Murphy.

I am not at liberty to have any discussion about the possibility of a DEI Convert.

I spent 7 days @ GMMG  (March 2010) going through the archives & have the documentation BUT it is confidential.

August 8, 2015

The new LS1 spun a bearing…. another new block….

New LS1 with Forged pistons & rods & it will be right once & for all.

It just has to be right!

New motor vs. original motor discussion…………..

Some feel this is an issue.  You can look at it a number of different ways.

Over 25% of all the 550 GMMG’s do not have the orignal GM Engine they were born with.

GMMG removed the original factory motor & installed C5R 427’s & 454 engines in over 125 cars.

Mike Carnahan (now with Vengeance Racing) & Ron Moen upgraded & built most of the GMMG motors & engine upgrades for GMMG.

Mike did the final work, test, tune & dyno work on HRE #2000.  He kept the engine just like GMMG would have done it.

I look at this as a huge plus…………  A GMMG with 39k total miles & over $20k in a new Mike Carnahan motor.

HRE #2000 is spot on & the best running GMMG I’ve owned.

Jim Smith

October 10, 2015

Car was shipped to Mike Carnahan @ Vengeance because Parks couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t run.

The crank position sensor was finger tight instead of 22 foot pounds & the engine wouldn’t run.

Mike put 50 miles on – cut the oil filter apart – looked good.

He drove it more, reprogramed & Dyno’d the motor – cut oil filter apart again – OK

Mike said Thompson Motorsports built a great motor & eveything checks out 100%.

Finally after 3 motors & 16 months without the car I have some good news.

POINT – MIKE CARNAHAN IS THE ONLY PERSON I WILL EVER LET WORK ON MY GMMG MOTORS.

He knows the setup & tune becasue he built the GMMG motors originally.

Thanks Mike.

HRE #2000 will be joining Jim’s GMMG Collection

Jeff Gassen & I have been pals for a number of years now & have had a lot of fun chasing each other on the Power Tour with his Hot Rod Edition #2000.

I’ve always loved the Navy Blue Metallic & Red Stripe paint & hoped to someday own HRE #2000.  Today is my lucky day!

It’s a Phase 2 – 435 hp with line lock, cutout exhaust special wheels & center caps.  This car flies & there are many You Tube video’s of this car.

#2000 has been on three Power Tours & I will be driving it on the 2014 HRPT – Jeff was the original owner.

Just had to visit Jeff & HRE 2000.

The Vette (’58??) will be the untimate ‘pro-touring’.  Jeff has owend it forever & has re-done it a couple of times before.

What makes HRE #2000 special?

One of 36 HRE’s (plus 2 prototypes)

Only Navy Blue Metallic with Red

New Phase II / 435hp LS1  – (Tuned & Dyno’d by Mike Carnahan @ Vengeance Racing)

Custom machined Hot Rod Edition Center Caps

New tires & brakes

Upgraded Stereo

Unlike the original owner I drive HRE 2000 nice & easy.

No burnouts, no rev-limiter shifts & low RPM’s.

This car looks & drives amazing – the NBM/red paint is 1 of 1

The FISKE wheels are spot on. (Just like the wide-body Dick Harrell wheels)

2002 Camaro Berger SS #72

Phase II 435hp, 6 speed, 4.10 gears

9K original miles

Built exclusively for racecar driver Johnny Benson, Jr.

Production:

1 of 1 produced

One of the rarest Camaros ever created. This is the only car of its kind in existence. This is a one off Camaro built for championship winning driver, Johnny Benson, Jr. No other car was built like this.

History:

Johnny Benson, Jr started his asphalt career at Berlin Raceway in Grand Rapids, MI. Berger Chevrolet sponsored his #21 racecar. In 1989, He went on to win the Late Model Championship and set a track record by winning 10 of 15 events. Having both been from Grand Rapids, Benson and Berger always had close ties. In 2002, which was to be the final year of Camaro production, Berger built a special car for Benson. This car is that special creation. It was painted Chrome Illusion which was from one of his race cars. This is an amazing paint job, featuring painted black stripes that have “JB” custom etched in them (when others had the horsepower rating). Mr. Benson drove this car for several thousand miles when new. It was shown at several events, including the Berger Super Chevy Show. It was eventually given back to Berger Chevy and was made available for sale to the public.

Documentation:

Johnny Benson career highlights:

Johnny Benson, Jr. career highlights and achievements include:

  • 1990 American Speed Association rookie of the year
  • 1993 American Speed Association AC-Delco Challenge series championship
  • 1994 NASCAR Busch Series rookie of the year
  • 1995 Busch Series championship
  • 1996 Winston Cup NASCAR rookie of the year

  • 2007 Craftsman Truck Series most popular driver
  • 2008 Craftsman Truck Series most popular driver
  • 2008 Craftsman Truck Series championship.

Historical Significance:

#72 is historically significant on numerous levels. Berger Chevy is the lone survivor of the muscle car era dealerships. GMMG put dealer performance back into the Camaro. Johnny Benson, Jr. is a championship winning driver who won on different levels of racing.

These attributes and the fact that the car is one off built, make it one of the most collectible Camaros and muscle cars ever created. It is rarer and more unique then any Yenko or Motion Camaro from the ‘60s. It will certainly continue to appreciate in value for years to come.

2002 GMMG Bobby Labonte Blackbird #38 of 50

.

#38 is 1 of 1

.

Why #38 is a very significant car in Pontiac History?

2002 was the last year for the TransAm.

Unlike the 2010 Camaro, no more TransAM’s will be ever be built.

TA’s are over & GM has pulled the plug on the entire Pontiac Division

#38 was a special car built for Bobby Labonte of NASCAR

Only 50  Blackbird’s were built.

.

#38 is the only White & Interstate Green Blackbird ever built.

Phase I / 380hp  –  6 speed – Sub Frame Connectors

NASCAR Long Tube headers with Open Chamber Exhaust

.

Why is GMMG & Carl Black Pontiac important?  (Kennesaw, GA)

GMMG built special TransAm Blackbird’s & Berger Camaro’s just like the Yenko cars of the late 60’s & 70’s

Just like SLP Firehawk’s & Camaro’s, Shelby & Rousch Mustang’s of today only in much smaller build numbers

Carl Black Blackbirds

The Carl Black Pontiac “Blackbird” Trans Am

Carl Black Pontiac GMC located in Atlanta, GA decided to take factory spec WS6 TAs and make a few special modified TAs for sale to the public. An excerpt from the original “Blackbird” web page follows:

“In February of 2001, Carl Black produced the first series of High Performance Pontiac Trans Ams in memory of the late Muscle Car Era. Our goal at Carl Black, was to produce a performance car that combines the nostalgic feel and sound of the Sixties with the technology, power, handling and style of today. The result was the Blackbird, the pinnacle of 35 years of muscle cars. Fifty of these specialty vehicles were sold to collectors and power enthusiasts across the Country.
Each Blackbird starts out as a stock Pontiac Trans Am WS6 Ram Air with LS1 5.7 liter V-8 engine, 6-speed manual transmission and Hurst shift linkage. Carl Black´s high performance modifications include a 380 horsepower / 400 ft lb torque engine package, short throw shifter, high flow air box lid, chambered cat back exhaust, front and rear Eibach 1.5″ lowering springs, dimpled front and rear disc brake rotors and Torq-Thrust II 17″ ARE wheels.

The Blackbird´s performance is very impressive, doing 0 to 60 mph in just 4.40 seconds, and turning the quarter mile in 12.87 seconds at 111 mph. The cat back 3 chambered exhaust system provides increased horsepower and an impressive note reminiscent of the late 1960´s muscle cars. The under-drive pulley system delivers 337 horsepower to the rear wheels. The dimpled rotors add additional cooling to the 4 wheel disc brakes, and the lowered suspension offers improved handling and control.

The Blackbird appearance package features dual 380 HP hood accent stripes, Blackbird Cloisonné hood and fender badging, Metallic Silver rear lower panel, all new silver face gauges on the instrument panel, nostalgic black shift ball, auto dimming rearview mirror with compass, Mobil 1 oil fill cap and decal, car cover and floormats with embroidered Blackbird logo.

Only 50 Blackbird’s were produced. Each car´s number is displayed on the windshield and rear view mirror, and is stamped on the engine and exhaust manifold. The Blackbird was only offered as a complete package, and only from Carl Black.”

GMMG was responsible for converting the TAs from their stock form to the Blackbirds that were offered for sale by Carl Black Pontiac. Visit their website for more information:  GMMG

Why I prefer the GMMG F-Body Blackbird TransAm’s & Berger Camaro’s?

Very low build numbers vs. SLP, Shelby & Rousch.

These cars will be/are the big dollar collector cars now & in the future

Performance is to die for & they will run low 12 second ¼ mile times in street trim at over 114mph.

This is far superior to any of my old muscle cars in street trim. T

hey handle like a dream with the tuned suspension is spectacular & they autocross, turn & stop on a dime

Highway mileage is 25-28+ mpg with the tach under 1,900rpm @ 70mph in 6th gear

I own & have owned over 125 GM cars Muscle Cars & Corvette’s over the last 45 years & the F-Body cars are so far superior that I have sold all but one (& it’s for sale right now)  of the older muscle cars. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking the older muscle cars BUT the new F-Body GMMG Cars will outperform most all of them in street trim.

.

All the creature comforts:

Great looks, air, tilt, power steering & brakes, superior sound, leather/lumbar seats,  T-Tops or Convert’s

.

Future?

Why not own the rarest TransAm’s & Camaro’s on the planet? These cars are great long term investments like the Yenko cars of the late 60’s & early 70’s.

If you know of any GMMG Cars for sale, I’m interested.

.

Cost?

New Blackbird’s could only be purchased from Carl Black Pontiac in Kennesaw, GA

Talk about a collector’s dream – car # 38 in a series of only 50 special built promotional Blackbird’s! Yes, the only car built for Bobby Labonte.!

.

Here’s the scoop – only 50 original Blackbirds were produced, and sold quickly by Carl Black Pontiac. Collectors and car enthusiasts realized the immediate collectability and rarity of these special Blackbird’s.

These cars were not the regular factory Ram Air WS-6 TA’s. and had the special performance modifications & badging from GMMG.The production run of these cars was very limited. (only 50)Black Hurst shift knob with short-throw performance linkage, Blackbird specific white gauge cluster, special Blackbird  Badging, custom Car Cover and Blackbird floor mats.

.

GMMG Blackbird’s represent the pinnacle of Pontiac’s all-American muscle – a thrill to own, show and most importantly drive!”

LEAD CAMERA CAR #0031

The LEAD CAMERA PACE CAR remained with GM/Pontiac Racing in the GM Heritage Collection until it was

released for sale at Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach, April 2009.

This was a ‘special event’ build & was NEVER assigned to a Pontiac Dealer.

All GM Heritage Cars were sold on a Salvage Title or Bill of Sale.  This car has the Salvage title.

#0031 has only 2,515 actual miles

Signed by Bobby Labonte Car #18 – the highest finishing Pontiac. (6th place)

2002 GMMG Bobby Labonte Blackbird #38 is also in my collection.

The ‘LEAD CAMERA’ Car may be the most significant Pace Car in Pontiac & maybe Daytona History.

Why?

2000 was the very first race of the New Millenium.

This was the last year Dale Earnhardt finished the Daytona 500.  Dale died in 2001 on a last lap crash.

2001 DEI Intimidator Camaro SS #54 with 1,746 miles is also in the collection

Dale Earnhardt, Sr. liked to bump the back of the Pace Car during caution laps just to let them know he was there.

Rumor has it that the lower left of license plate  (on blue graphic) is one of his bumps.

I have not found the video clip or lap # yet when this couold have happenned.

True or not, it makes a great story.

To insure 100% authenticity the camera mounting tape and wire clips have been left on the car.
